Portugal has set a remarkable new record in the realm of renewable energy production, surpassing its consumption demands for an impressive duration of 149 consecutive hours. REN, the nation's energy manager, confirmed this exceptional feat on Monday, highlighting the significant progress made in Portugal's sustainable energy endeavors.
During the period between 04:00 on October 31 and 09:00 on November 6, the country's renewable energy output reached a substantial 1102 GWh, exceeding national consumption by 262 GWh. This continuous surplus not only marks a notable achievement in sustainable energy generation but also underscores Portugal's commitment to fostering a greener and more environmentally conscious energy landscape.
Within this unprecedented 149-hour timeframe, Portugal also broke two additional records. The first record, spanning from 10 pm on October 31 to 9 am on Monday, highlighted the moment when renewable energy production outstripped the total demand of the national grid, inclusive of hydroelectric reservoir pumping requirements. During this period, the nation relied solely on renewable sources, without resorting to conventional thermal generation methods such as natural gas combined cycle power plants. This noteworthy achievement lasted for an impressive 131 consecutive hours, nearly tripling the previous record set in 2021.
Furthermore, Portugal successfully achieved another milestone between 10 am on November 1 and 9 am on November 5. During this 95-hour stretch, the country's renewable energy production surpassed consumption without the necessity of natural gas combined cycle power plants. Portugal even managed to export energy to Spain during this time, further solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable energy practices. This accomplishment surpassed the earlier record of 52 hours set in 2018, emphasizing the nation's unwavering commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly energy initiatives.
REN emphasized that these groundbreaking achievements validate Portugal's dedication to gradually integrating renewable energy sources, emphasizing the nation's unwavering commitment to maintaining the utmost standards of supply security and service quality. Portugal's continuous strides in sustainable energy production serve as a testament to the country's steadfast pursuit of a greener and more sustainable energy future.
