Airport Jobs Under Threat due to 'Reduction in Offshore Activity'
Dozens of jobs are under threat at an airport used as a gateway to the North Sea by the oil industry.
Serco has begun a consultation with its workforce at Scatsta in Shetland, putting around 30 posts at risk.
The Hampshire-based firm blamed the move on a “reduction in offshore activity” as a result of a “declining oil price”.
Any cuts are likely to be achieved by making some staff redundant and moving others into different roles.
Last week, helicopter operator Bristow revealed up to 20 pilots could lose their jobs at its Scatsta headquarters.
John Thorne, Serco contract director in Scatsta, said “I have carried out briefings with employees on the impact of a reduced flying schedule that affects our contract at Scatsta Airport.
“We have asked for applications to a voluntary redundancy programme and offered possible redeployment to other Serco contracts. We are currently in discussion with the unions and employees and it is very important that employees know first how this will affect them and when.”
Serco employs more than 100 people at Scasta.
