Aker BP and OMV Successfully Conclude 3D Seismic Survey for CO2 Storage License in Norwegian North Sea
Aker BP, a prominent Norwegian oil and gas company, along with its Austrian partner OMV, has finalized the acquisition of a comprehensive 3D seismic survey over the Poseidon CCS license area (licence EXL005) in the Norwegian North Sea, as announced by OMV on Wednesday.
The Poseidon CCS license area, situated approximately 100 km off the Norwegian coast, has been the focal point of the survey spanning over 500 km2. The primary objective of the seismic campaign was to establish a high-resolution imaging of the CO2 storage complex, thus laying the foundation for effective monitoring of storage integrity.
OMV underscored the successful execution of the Poseidon 3D seismic survey within the designated timeline and budget. A photograph shared by OMV depicted what appeared to be a PGS vessel towing seismic streamers, providing visual evidence of the accomplishment.
In March 2023, OMV (Norge) AS and Aker BP were awarded the Poseidon license, signifying a joint venture between the two entities. The Poseidon license entails a comprehensive work program, which encompasses 3D seismic acquisition and associated studies, followed by a critical drill-or-drop decision scheduled for no later than 2025. As a 50/50 partnership operated by Aker BP, the Poseidon license holds the potential for accommodating storage of over 5 million tons of CO2 annually. The ultimate objective is to facilitate the injection of CO2 captured from various industrial emitters in North-West Europe, including emissions from Borealis' diverse industrial sites across the continent.
