Aker BP Gains Approval to Deploy Odfjell Drilling Rig on Two North Sea Fields
Norwegian oil and gas company Aker BP has received consent from Norway's offshore safety regulator, the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA), to utilize Odfjell Drilling's Deepsea Nordkapp rig for production drilling on the Alvheim and Tyrving fields, both located in the North Sea off Norway.
The Deepsea Nordkapp, built in 2019, is a sixth-generation semi-submersible drilling rig designed for harsh environments and winter conditions. Odfjell Drilling acquired it from Samsung Heavy in April 2018.
The Alvheim field, situated in the northern part of the North Sea west of Heimdal, encompasses six deposits: Kameleon, Boa, Kneler, Viper, Kobra, and Gekko. With water depths ranging from 120 to 130 meters, the field was discovered in 1998 and has been in production since 2008, utilizing subsea templates tied to an FPSO.
Conversely, the Tyrving field is located in the central North Sea, approximately 20 kilometers east of the Alvheim field. It comprises two discoveries: Trine and Trell, situated five kilometers apart, with a water depth of 120 meters. The PDO for Tyrving was approved in 2023, and the development concept includes two multilateral wells, one in each discovery, tied back to the FPSO Alvheim. Production is scheduled to commence in 2025, with estimated recoverable resources of approximately 25 million barrels of oil equivalent and exceptionally low emissions, estimated at 0.3 kg CO2 per barrel.
