Avangrid, a subsidiary of the Spanish renewable energy giant Iberdrola, has achieved a significant milestone in the U.S. renewable energy sector by unveiling the country's first offshore wind substation at its Vineyard Wind 1 project. The Vineyard Wind 1 is set to be the first large-scale offshore wind farm in the United States, located off the coast of Massachusetts.
The Vineyard Wind 1 offshore substation plays a crucial role in the project, as it will collect the power generated by the 62 wind turbine generators and deliver it to the onshore power grid through two export cables. The project is expected to start delivering power before the end of this year, generating a total of 806 MW of clean and renewable energy, which will be sufficient to power more than 400,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts.
Pedro Azagra, Avangrid's CEO, expressed his excitement and pride in reaching this milestone, stating that it showcases the hard work put in by the team to make Vineyard Wind 1 a reality. This project is at the forefront of pioneering the offshore wind industry in the United States and is paving the way for the nation's clean energy future.
The installation of the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore substation was carried out by DEME Offshore using its flagship vessel, Orion. The substation, weighing 3,000 tons, marks the first offshore wind substation ever installed in the U.S. It also holds significance as the sixth and largest substation in Iberdrola Group's global fleet to date. The Iberdrola Group has previously installed five other substations at its offshore wind farms in the UK, Germany, France, and another in Germany.
With this major achievement, Avangrid and its partners are positioning the U.S. as a prominent player in the offshore wind industry, promising a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the entire country. The completion of the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore substation is a crucial step towards the successful implementation of the project, which is set to be a game-changer in the U.S. renewable energy landscape.
