bp, the prominent British oil and gas company, is set to make significant strides in its natural gas exploration endeavors, unveiling plans to drill four exploratory wells in Egypt during the fourth quarter of this year. The ambitious initiative is in line with the company's commitment to expand its natural gas operations and investments in the region.
Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tarek al-Molla, revealed that two of the planned wells will be situated at the Raven gas field within the North Alexandria Concession. The remaining two wells are earmarked for drilling at the King Mariout offshore exploration block.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by bp and its natural gas partners to channel approximately $3.5 billion (£2.7 billion) into the exploration and development of natural gas resources in Egypt. Over the span of three years, these investments are poised to significantly bolster Egypt's natural gas sector.
The announcement of these plans follows a constructive meeting between bp's Chief Executive, Bernard Looney, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. The discussions between the two leaders extended beyond exploration, encompassing potential collaborations in reducing emissions, investing in green and renewable energy solutions, and exploring opportunities in hydrogen production.
The Egypt Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources stated in a Facebook post, "The meeting also addressed the interest of the British company to increase its business and investments in the natural gas field in the Mediterranean region following the successes it has witnessed and the flow of investments of major global companies to it."
The Egyptian government's commitment to expanding its natural gas exploration efforts is evident in its extensive program, aimed at drilling a total of 35 gas exploration wells in the Mediterranean Sea and the Nile Delta by July 2025. This initiative is expected to be a catalyst for not only expanding Egypt's energy resources but also fostering partnerships with global energy players, as demonstrated by bp's strategic endeavors in the region.
