UK-based offshore vessel designer Chartwell Marine has teamed up with specialized vessel designer and shipbuilder VARD to introduce a groundbreaking 55-meter offshore wind craft known as the Midi-SOV. Set to enter both the US and European markets in 2024, this vessel is designed to address the growing need for larger crew transfer vessels (CTVs) in the offshore wind industry while prioritizing stability, cost-effectiveness, and operability.

The Midi-SOV, designed to be Jones Act-compliant and ready for production in US shipyards, is a response to the challenges posed by the increasing size of offshore wind turbines and the demand for larger CTVs. Instead of simply scaling up existing CTV designs, Chartwell Marine started from scratch to create a vessel that meets the evolving needs of the industry.

The vessel's design emphasizes stability and workability, incorporating a low waterplane shape to minimize roll motion, enabling stable operations and walk-to-work capabilities. It features spacious accommodations, including 36 single bunk cabins for SPS crew, 20 crew cabins, and various facilities such as a gym, auditorium, meeting rooms, and day rooms.

The Midi-SOV can be equipped with Methanol-Diesel Dual-Fuel engines, electric propulsion, and an energy storage system. It aims to provide a cost-efficient alternative to full-sized service operation vessels (SOVs) to help address the increasing costs and challenges faced by the offshore wind industry.
