More than 1,000 workers at Chevron's Gorgon Project off WA's north-west coast have voted overwhelmingly in favour taking industrial action over roster concerns.

The workers are employed by contractor Chicago Bridge and Iron and want to change the current rosters from 26 days on and with nine off, to a more family-friendly 20 days on, with 10 off.

Ninety-four per cent of votes cast were in favour of protected industrial action.

Australian Manufacturing Workers Union state secretary Steve McCartney told 720 ABC Perth the workers were prepared to accept less pay in order to spend more time with their families.

"What the guys and ladies have been saying on the island for quite some time now is that they want one third of their time with their families and they'll give two thirds of their time to the company, they think that's fair and equitable," he said.

"It's around $8,000 a year they'll lose, but what they gain is more time with their family."

He said the workers were required to provide one week's notice before taking any action.

"We've been trying to negotiate with the company to try to get to the point where we believe our members would be satisfied and we didn't get to that point," Mr McCartney said.

"If the company wants to talk, we want to listen to try and make sure we can get the rosters we can.

"If not, the guys will start taking rolling action.

"They can have a 24-hour strike, they can withdraw their labour for 24 hours, or they can withdraw their labour for one hour or they can refuse to do paperwork for the day."

The $55 billion project is 90 per cent complete, but is months behind schedule.

Chevron had aimed to ship its first LNG cargo before the end of the year, but has conceded it may not happen until next year.

The company has been contacted for comment.
