ConocoPhillips has announced the early commencement of natural gas production from the Tommeliten A field, situated in the Greater Ekofisk Area in the North Sea, offshore Norway. Significantly, the field has initiated gas delivery nearly six months ahead of the initial schedule, as confirmed by ConocoPhillips on Friday.
The Tommeliten A Unit licensees, including prominent entities such as PGNiG Upstream Norway AS, ConocoPhillips Skandinavia AS, TotalEnergies EP Norge AS, Vår Energi ASA, ConocoPhillips (U.K.) Holdings Limited, TotalEnergies E&P UK Limited, and ENI UK Limited, have all been instrumental in ensuring this project's efficient and timely development. Steinar Våge, the President for Europe, Middle East, and North Africa at ConocoPhillips, expressed gratitude to the collaborative efforts of contractors and business partners that contributed to the successful execution of the project.
The Tommeliten A development concept incorporates a two-by-six slot subsea production system, further fortified by an electrically heated flowline that is linked back to the Ekofisk Complex. Notably, the field development also encompasses the installation of a new processing module on Ekofisk 2/4 M, an electrical heating module on Ekofisk 2/4 Z, and essential upgrades to the existing gas train on Ekofisk 2/4 J. With the potential for additional wells, the total number of production wells could reach 12, with current figures standing at 11.
The total resource potential for the Tommeliten A field is estimated to be within the range of 120-180 million barrels of oil equivalent, primarily comprising gas (approximately 70%) and condensate (approximately 30%). Initial production projections indicate a peak output ranging from 35,000 to 48,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, with potential expansions based on evolving processing capabilities and well streams over time.
Demonstrating its commitment to sustainable practices, ConocoPhillips underscores that the Tommeliten A emissions intensity is estimated to be as low as 7.5 kg CO2 equivalent per BOE, Scope 1 & 2 on a net equity and gross operated basis. Furthermore, with minimal greenhouse gas emissions, the project is poised to generate substantial value and employment opportunities, all while contributing to energy security on the path to achieving net-zero goals.
The project's greenfield subsea templates are strategically positioned approximately 25 kilometers southwest of the Ekofisk Complex, with a total capital investment of approximately NOK 13 billion. The initiative has facilitated around 5,000 job opportunities during the project phase, with most contracts awarded to Norwegian businesses. With ConocoPhillips Skandinavia AS leading as the operator of the Tommeliten A Unit, key stakeholders share ownership interests as specified within the project. The Tommeliten A field's historical significance dates back to its discovery in 1977, positioning it as a pivotal contributor to the region's energy landscape.
