Equinor, the Norwegian state-owned energy company, has partnered with U.S.-based autonomous robotics developer Nauticus Robotics, in collaboration with Stinger Technology, for a pilot project aimed at enhancing leak detection technology. This strategic move by Equinor not only expands its presence in the North Sea region but also offers Nauticus the opportunity to qualify for future contracts with the energy giant.
The primary objective of the pilot project is to deploy Nauticus' leak detection technology service using autonomous robots. By leveraging this technology, Equinor aims to enhance leak detection capabilities, aligning with its commitment to sustainability and environmental safety. As part of its core principles, Equinor recognizes the importance of having robust methods and systems for leak detection, particularly given its extensive network of subsea infrastructure, including around 600 subsea wells and approximately 9,000 km of subsea pipelines, risers, and cables.
Nicolaus Radford, CEO of Nauticus, emphasized the versatility of the company's fleet offerings and the increasing demand for such technology in addressing challenges in subsea operations. Radford stated, "This milestone is yet another example of how we are at the forefront of this technical revolution and are changing how work is done in our precious oceans."
The collaboration between Equinor, Nauticus, and Stinger Technology underscores Equinor's commitment to exploring innovative ways to enhance its capabilities while ensuring environmental safety. By embracing cutting-edge technology and solutions, Equinor aims to remain a pioneer in the industry and uphold its sustainability principles.
Nauticus has been making significant strides in the industry, securing various contracts. In May 2023, the company received an additional $2.7 million under its ongoing contract with Leidos, further advancing the development of its Aquanaut-derived subsea platform. Following this, Nauticus secured a contract with Petrobras in June 2023 for deploying and testing its Aquanaut autonomous subsea robot offshore Brazil.
This collaboration exemplifies the industry's shift towards innovative technology solutions to improve operational efficiency, enhance environmental sustainability, and drive transformative change in traditional practices.
