Equinor, the Norwegian energy company, has been granted approval by the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA) to utilize a semi-submersible rig owned by COSL Drilling for production drilling in the North Sea off Norway. The consent covers production drilling activities, including plugging and abandonment (P&A) operations, as well as completion of two additional wells - M-1 BH on Statfjord Øst and F-4 CH on Statfjord Nord.

The Statfjord Nord field is situated in the Tampen area of the northern North Sea, about 17 kilometers north of the Statfjord field. With water depths ranging from 250 to 290 meters, the field was discovered in 1977, and its plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved in 1990. Two production templates and one water injection template have been developed and connected to the Statfjord C platform. Production from the Statfjord Nord field commenced in 1995.

Located seven kilometers northeast of the Statfjord field, the Statfjord Øst field lies in the Tampen area, with water depths between 150 to 190 meters. The field's discovery occurred in 1976, and the PDO was approved in 1990. Two subsea production templates and one water injection template have been established, all tied back to the Statfjord C platform. Additionally, two production wells have been drilled from Statfjord C, and production from the field began in 1994.

The Statfjord field is situated in the Tampen area, straddling the border between the Norwegian and British sectors of the North Sea. The Norwegian share of the field is 85.47%, with water depths at the site reaching 150 meters. Discovered in 1974, the Statfjord field has three production platforms: Statfjord A, Statfjord B, and Statfjord C, with the latter commencing production in 1985.

Equinor has classified Statfjord Nord, Statfjord Øst, and Sygna as three satellite fields connected to the Statfjord C platform. The Statfjord Øst field is equally split between production licenses 037 in block 33/9 (Statfjord area) and 089 in block 34/7 (Snorre area).

The COSL Promoter, built in 2012, is a semi-submersible drilling rig designed to operate in water depths of up to 750 meters. The rig will play a crucial role in Equinor's exploration and production activities, facilitating operations at the Statfjord Øst and Statfjord Nord fields, contributing to the company's energy endeavors in the region.
