Petrobras, the Brazilian energy giant, has embarked on a digital transformation journey by entering into a long-term contract with oilfield services leader SLB. The aim of this collaboration is to leverage AI and cloud-based technologies to enhance production and establish the foundation for achieving decarbonization and net-zero targets.
Under the five-year contract, SLB's Delfi digital platform will be deployed across Petrobras' enterprise, enabling digital transformation across exploration, development, and production operations. This includes the migration of subsurface workflows to the cloud, resulting in significantly accelerated decision-making processes.
SLB highlights that this contract represents one of Petrobras' most substantial investments in cloud-based technologies and serves as a cornerstone for the company's net-zero goals.
Rakesh Jaggi, President of Digital & Integration at SLB, explains that Petrobras will leverage AI, machine learning, and high-performance computing technology to drive efficiency and production improvements in its exploration and production (E&P) business. By digitally transforming Petrobras' E&P workflows through the Delfi platform, the company aims to enhance efficiency while demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and the energy transition.
Furthermore, SLB reports that the implementation of the Delfi platform has led to significant reductions in processing time for geological and geophysical (G&G) interpretation. The integration of AI and machine learning applications has reduced fault interpretation time in petrophysical modeling workflows by 60%, with certain workflows experiencing a reduction from hours to minutes.
SLB emphasizes that Petrobras' substantial investment in digital technology for E&P is aligned with the company's strategy to increase total production across its operations. However, no financial details regarding the contract have been disclosed.
In April 2021, SLB partnered with Equinor and Microsoft to deploy the Delfi cognitive E&P environment, integrating seamlessly with the OSDU Data Platform to enhance Equinor's data integration capabilities and decision-making processes.
Several months later, SLB introduced PeriScope Edge, a cloud-based multilayer mapping-while-drilling service that leverages digital solutions to provide reservoir insights and optimize well construction efficiency.
In March 2022, SLB announced that ConocoPhillips would utilize its cloud-based Delfi cognitive E&P environment to migrate reservoir engineering modeling, data, and workflows to the cloud, further expanding the adoption of digital technologies in the oil and gas industry.
