Petronas and ExxonMobil Make New Oil Discovery Offshore Suriname
Posted 03/11/2023 13:56
Petronas Suriname E&P, in collaboration with ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Suriname, has announced a recent oil discovery at the Roystonea-1 exploration well within Block 52, located offshore Suriname. The well, drilled to a depth of 5,315 meters in a water depth of 904 meters, encountered several oil-bearing Campanian sandstone reservoir packages, triggering further evaluation to gauge the full extent of the discovery and its potential development synergy with the Sloanea-1 find in 2020 within the same block.
Highlighting the significance of the Roystonea-1 success, Petronas Vice President of Exploration, Mohd Redhani Abdul Rahman, emphasized the company's commitment to collaborating closely with the host authority, Staatsolie, and its partners to unlock Suriname's hydrocarbon potential. With Block 52 encompassing an area of 4,749 square kilometers within the prospective Suriname-Guyana basin, the discovery is viewed as a step forward in ensuring global energy demands are met.
Operated by Petronas Suriname E&P with a 50% stake, and the remaining interest held by ExxonMobil Exploration and Production Suriname, Block 52's water depths range from 160 to 3,600 feet. Petronas had secured the services of Noble Corporation's Noble Discoverer semi-submersible rig under a one-well contract in July 2023, with the option for a one-well extension. The drilling activities, scheduled to commence in August 2023, signify a crucial milestone in Petronas' strategic international upstream ventures.
Datuk Adif Zulkifli, Petronas' Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Upstream, underscored the Roystonea-1 oil discovery as a positive step in their differentiated barrel strategy, emphasizing the focus on significant findings with minimal contaminants. In addition to Block 52, Petronas Suriname E&P operates Block 48 with full participating interest and is a non-operating partner with a 30% interest in the neighboring Block 53, where the Baja-1 oil discovery was made in 2022. This new oil discovery further solidifies the companies' commitment to tapping into Suriname's rich hydrocarbon potential.
