Seplat Energy Plc has sadly confirmed the death of one individual and the ongoing search for three missing crew members following the collapse of its oil rig, Majestic, near Ovhor in Delta State.
The tragic incident occurred as the Depthwise swamp drilling rig, named Majestic, was en route to its designated drilling site in Delta State when it capsized. Of the 96-member crew, 92 individuals have been accounted for and confirmed to be safe.
Seplat Energy, in collaboration with the rig owner and relevant authorities, has initiated emergency response and rescue efforts to locate the missing personnel. The company's primary focus remains on the safety and well-being of all affected individuals and their families.
The thoughts and prayers of Seplat Energy are with the family and friends of the crew member who lost their life, as well as the three crew members who are currently missing. The company will continue its efforts to ensure their safety.
Further details about the incident are anticipated as the investigation progresses. Seplat Energy intends to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident.
Notably, the Majestic rig, an inland water drilling barge rig, has previously experienced challenges. In 2018, while operating for Conoil in Bayelsa State, a fire incident occurred, leading to a successful evacuation of all workers on board.
The Majestic rig, built in 2011, is designed for water depths of 8 to 24 feet and drilling depths of up to 30,000 feet. With the capacity to accommodate 120 people and equipped with safety measures like eight 25-person life rafts, the rig plays a crucial role in oil exploration.
Seplat Energy will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available about the incident. The company's commitment to safety and comprehensive investigation remains unwavering, as it strives to prevent future incidents and ensure the well-being of its personnel.
