Shell, a major player in the oil industry, has successfully initiated gas production from its unmanned Timi platform offshore Malaysia. This achievement marks Shell's first wellhead platform in the country powered by a combination of solar and wind energy sources, underlining the company's commitment to sustainable practices.
Notably, Timi's innovative power system makes it approximately 60% lighter than traditional tender-assisted drilling wellhead platforms that rely on fossil fuels. The platform's advanced technology showcases Shell's dedication to enhancing efficiency and reducing emissions.
Zoe Yujnovich, Shell’s Integrated Gas and Upstream Director, emphasized the significance of Timi's launch: "Timi demonstrates we are delivering more value with less emissions. Bringing the project online is also an example of our focus on performance, discipline, and simplification. It shows our ability to innovate and deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable projects that support a balanced energy transition for Malaysia."
Timi is engineered to produce up to 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day of gas during peak production. The gas will be transported through a newly constructed 80-kilometer pipeline to the F23 production hub. This initiative contributes to future growth prospects in the central Luconia region off the coast of Sarawak.
Shell's commitment to renewable energy solutions is underscored by Timi's solar and wind hybrid power system. In 2020, the Gorek field, Shell Malaysia's first fully solar powered wellhead platform, achieved its inaugural gas production milestone.
Furthermore, Shell Malaysia's dedication to renewable energy is reflected in the Rosmari-Marjoram gas project, a significant offshore and onshore endeavor in Sarawak. The project, initiated in 2022, is set to be primarily powered by renewable sources, including solar panels and hydroelectric plants.
The successful implementation of Timi's hybrid energy solution positions Shell as a trailblazer in sustainable energy practices and sets an example for the industry's transition towards a greener future.
