Ukrgasvydobuvannya, Ukraine's prominent energy exploration company, has made a significant discovery of untapped gas deposits in a field nestled in the Carpathian Mountains, believed to have been depleted until recently.
NJSC Naftogaz Ukraine revealed in a media statement that tests conducted on an exploratory well unveiled an impressive gas flow rate exceeding 7.06 million cubic feet per day (200,000 cubic meters per day). This marks the highest gas flow indicator for deposits in western Ukraine over the past two decades.
A team of specialists from Ukrburgaz, a subsidiary of Naftogaz, successfully drilled a new well with a depth reaching 5,250 feet (1,600 meters) to delve deeper into the supposedly exhausted region. The achievement of record gas production rates is attributed to the deployment of cutting-edge technologies, notably the Ivan Bohun drilling rig.
Oleg Tolmachev, the acting general director of Ukrgasvydobuvannya, expressed enthusiasm about the outcome, stating, "This result demonstrates the effectiveness of modern technologies and new approaches to data interpretation. The western region of Ukraine has great potential for new hydrocarbon deposits, which is confirmed by the experience of neighboring countries. We are now intensifying our activities in this region, in particular with regard to the introduction of new technologies and the attraction of investments."
The new well was strategically laid out based on the interpretation of fresh data derived from recent seismic 3D surveys. Its rapid operationalization included the construction of pipelines and the modernization of the gas preparation plant, showcasing the efficacy of swift and modern exploration techniques.
Specialists from Lvivgasvydobuvannya, a subsidiary of Naftogaz, are actively engaged in enhancing the technological infrastructure of the local area to further boost well productivity. Maksym Vityk, the director of exploration and development at Ukrgasvydobuvannya, highlighted the positive implications of the discovery, stating, "Based on the results of geophysical studies, our specialists identified a number of productive horizons that expand the prospects for drilling new wells. The results of the test well will now make it possible to estimate the reserves of the new deposit."
The newfound gas reserves exemplify the untapped potential in the western region of Ukraine, offering renewed prospects for energy exploration and contributing to the nation's energy security.
